Story: Hi scott my name is Sarah.  A few friends and I went to visit this cemetery and stumbled on some images that I hope you can help me understand. I have pictures of mist, orbs and what looks like a man.
I’m only sending you a few pictures of river road, because there was more activity at the cemetery. If you would like to see more photos from River Road I will send you them.
The picture of me sitting interests me because in the first picture there is an orb, and the next picture if you look, looks like mist is  in the same spot. (these two are  picture is taken at River Road)
Also the picture titled mist is at river road, I took a picture just a second after I noticed the mist, and nothing was in the second photo.
Also the picture that looks like it could be an older gentleman in a suit, thats the only picture I edited, and the only edit is the red around him to show you what I am talking about.
None of us was smoking at any time while I was snapping shots. It was pitch black out.
If you have time can you please look through these and tell me what your opinion is.
thank you ;]

Rainbow Road asylum?

Story: Hello Scott, My friends and I were bored today after an adventurous day at Six Flags, and I always heard about this “asylum” which I deemed immediately to be false because I was never a believer. Let me tell you I am now. My friends and I all saw lights flickering on and off in the house while it was still inhabited and a strange cloud of thick smoke seemed to form around the garage of the newly built home on the right side. I keep seeing different stories about the history/Stories/Hauntings of this Rainbow Road and I really just want to know the history behind “the mansion.” The history of the houses on Rainbow Road intrigue me and just want to know the truth. Who has owned the house, why people moved out, why there were transfers of ownership and such. I’ve began to research Krilich but that leaves some grey areas. Who owned the property before him? Why did he leave? Who bought it after? ETC. If there is any way you can help me figure out the history of these specific houses that are supposedly haunted and insane asylums please let me know. It means a lot. Thanks.  Mark M.

Response from Scott Markus: First off, you’ve come to the right place.  This was the first site to report about the unfortunate death that happened on the Krillich estate and we even have the crime scene photos thanks to the amazing willingness of the sister and father of the boy who died to share their stories with us.  However, I’m curious where exactly you were.  There was a sanitarium off of Cuba Road, which is mentioned in these pages, which lead to many people accidentally calling the Rainbow Road Krillich property an asylum – it simply never was.  Many of your questions will be answered by looking through the Rainbow Road category (found on the right), which not only talks about spooky stories and false urban legends like the asylum, but also the true history of the place, which, while tragic, is far less colorful than many of the tales being told today.

So, to get to the bottom of what you saw, can you describe to me exactly where you were?  It might be best to send a link or screen captured image from Google Maps.  All the best & I’m looking forward to hearing more from you!  Thanks for checking in!

A Note from Paranormal Investigator Dave Black

Intorduction from Slim Pictures: I have known Dave Black for several years and have come to completely trust his opinions on hauntings and haunted locations. He is a gifted medium and one of the forces behind Chicago’s Own Supernatural Occurrence Studies. To find out more about them, click here. In September ’06, after a long time away from Chicago’s ghost scene, I asked Dave to catch me up on the famed Rainbow Road property. After finding this information, I created the video that can be found attached to the submission on 8/9/05. The following is what he sent me. Additional details about the property can be found on the 8/9/05 submission and several others:

Submission by Dave Black: I have been to the location after the renovation began and it is still very haunted, specifically the area around where the silo is still standing. I actually talked to the realty agent that was handling the property and he was pretty conversational about the history of it. Apparently the guy who owned the house got into some legal trouble and was arrested in the late 80′s/early 90′s (he may have been involved in some mob activity and it was some sort of embezzling/tax/insurance type scam). The house laid dormant for about 10 years and then an investor bought the property and hired a local guy to keep an eye on it. The house was burned down as part of a training exercise for the fire department. I also heard from reliable sources that there was a bowling alley and a theater in the basement of the house and that Styx played there for the guys sons birthday party. I’m not sure the timeline on all this stuff its just kind of a jumble of information I picked up along the way.

Halloween of 1999 I stopped by to check the place out and there were 6 plain clothes police officers guarding the gates with shotguns. When I asked why they were there they refused to give any other details than “to keep out tresspassers.”

In respect to ‘orb’ photos, I learned to dismiss any and all orb pictures a long time ago in that 99.9% of the time they are just lens flare from moisture, rain, snow, dust, etc. The only surefire “proof” photographically is the mist and even then only when it is confirmed there is no smoking going on.

I am doing some work on the House of Blues and the Marina Towers you may be interested in as well.

Mist pictures at White Cemetery

PhotobucketThese pictures were submitted by a visiter to the site. You can right-click and open them in a new window to see them in full size.  I personally find mist photos to be much more interesting than orb photos, however, not being there myself, I cannot vouch for these images not being the result of cigarette smoke or visible breath on a cold day.  Regardless, enjoy! As with all pictures on this site, click on the images to open larger versions of them.

Strange Picture from Cuba Road

PhotobucketStory / Question: Can you tell me if these photos look like anything unsual. A few friends and I were up at Cuba road one night. It was in early Jan. 2005. We were parked directly on a side street which is directly in front of the cemetery across Cuba Rd. My friend has digital camera and she took a few pictures. In one picture in particular, there is a dense area of what seems to be fog all around us. Also in that same picture, you can kind of make out like a leg type object in the left hand corner. What is this? Another picture, after development, started turning colors it was the weirdest thing. However, I think the oddest thing about this experience at Cuba Rd. was when we first arrived, my friend’s digital camera just came off the charger and had a full battery. But after the first initial foggy picture, the camera died. Then all of a sudden, about 10 minutes later, it came back on. Then she tried to take another picture but nothing came up on the camera, she took about 5 pictures like this. Her camera was brand new too. Kind of odd. Have you ever heard of cameras not working after an initial photograph? I attached the pictures to see what you make of them. Thank you so much.  Kate

P.S. We also hear a lot of rumors about Rainbow Rd., what is the truth behind Rainbow Rd. Also last time we went to Rainbow Rd. the house or whatever it is was for sale and they were demolishing what was on that piece of property.

Response from Scott Markus: Kate, First off, thanks for your submission and you made a lot of very good observations. In your eMail it sounded like you meant to send several pictures, however I only got one. In the one I got, there’s definitely a lot of fog, there also appears to be two small orbs toward the right of the picture. There may be a few more smaller ones further off in the distance, but it’s hard to tell if they are orbs or reflections of distant objects. Some questions I would ask are: What were the weather conditions that night? Was it foggy? In addition to explaining the fog, it would also explain the orbs, which tends to be how larger droplets of moisture appear on a digital image. Was that van engine still running? Was anyone in the area smoking and was it cold enough that people could see their breath? Pictures like this can be tough because one that can be explained often looks exactly like one that can’t be explained.

Please do feel free to send the additional images and I’ll take a look at those as well.

In terms of having a paranormal experience, I believe you definitely did have one. The reason I say this is your story with the malfunctioning camera. Equipment failure of every kind is common at haunted locations, from cell phones to cars to everything in between. You mention the camera hadn’t had these problems before. Has it since?

As for the House on Rainbow Road, yes, it’s well known as a haunted location.  From what I’ve heard, I believe it.  However, I have not experienced anything there myself.  From what I’ve heard the entire property is being leveled and sold off as, I believe, five different lots for new homes.  Time will tell if the new homes become haunted as well. Thanks for writing & I look forward to hearing more.

Response from Katie: I just got your first email about the picture and camera. There was no fog whatsoever that night. The cars were turned off and it was not cold enough to see breath. Also no one in our group smokes. As for the camera, it works fine right now, there is nothing wrong with the camera, it is in perfect condition. My friend has taken many pictures since then and the camera worked on all of them. Also thank you for the email about Rainbow Rd. I do have another question for you. Have you ever heard of Flint Creek Road? It is located in Barrington too. Supposedly there was a car with 3 people and they were playing chicken and ran off road because the car that they were playing chicken with didn’t stop. Out of the 3 people, 2 died. The third person said that the other car didn’t stop and he blacked out. I was just wondering if you had heard anything about this. Also a group of us went down to Flint Creek Road and my one friends had his voice recorder on from his cell and he caught all of this weird almost talking noise on this recording. We were all quiet so we don’t know what it was. Do you have any idea what it could have been? Can cell voice recorders pick up supernatural noises? Thank you so very much for your input and help.

Response from Scott Markus:I do believe that any type of recorder can capture EVPs, some better than others though.  I would love to hear what was captured and post it on the site.  I have never heard any Flint Creek Road hauntings, but will post your tale on the site and maybe someone else will chime in!

Ghostly images captured on film

Question: I’ve got some weird pictures of the gates on Rainbow Road/White Cemetery.  I was looking for some vintage looking shots for my photo assignment so I took some pictures of the gates.  Whats weird is that the negatives look like what I took a picture of but the actual prints look completely different. Every print I made has the same distorted faces on them. There are faces (skulls) on the prints and a lot of what looks like fog, but there wasn’t any fog at the time of the picture.  Now I know it wasn’t the chemicals in the developer, stop bath, or fixer because other pictures on the same roll (but not of the gates or cemetery) came out fine with good contrast.  What I would like to know, is Rainbow Road haunted and if so is that what is on my pictures?

Response from Scott Markus: First off, yes Rainbow Road houses a locally famous haunted location and White Cemetery is probably the most haunted Illinois cemetery North of the city.  As for the images on your film, I would really have to see them before I could comment on them.  Can you scan them and eMail them to me?  With your permission I would add them to my web site as well.  Let me know what you think and thanks for eMailing!
