Your True California Ghost Stories

My official announcement about doing a book on California ghost stories. I wanna hear everything you have to share. In this episode I talk about the Pasadena Suicide Bridge, Hollywood Forever Cemetery, the Queen Mary in Long Beach, the site of a former asylum in Lancaster, Shadow Ranch Park & Capistrano Avenue in West Hills, CA

Edit/Update:  Since first posting this video on YouTube, I’ve gotten some great comments.  A few are posted below:

* Two summers ago I went to Shadow Ranch Park with couple of friends of mine.  Here’s the story: the actual house you see use to be a ranch with a family etc etc. they had a son named “Blue” whose room is the on the 2nd floor to the right facing the house. it is said he died tragically on a horse riding accident. we know this because when we visited, the two workers there were so nice to give us a tour of the place.

The Lancaster Asylum is on 80th St west and f-12. you can see it on google maps it looks like 5 white boulder things making a circle on the map.

* I went to preschool at Shadow Ranch Park and it was my hang out in the 70′s as a teenager. The house has a few secret rooms long since boarded up. Also the author of The Wizard of Oz lived there around the same time the book was written. The story was that the original owner committed suicide. As a teenager we use to sneak in the house at night and never once did I see or hear anything paranormal. Although it would not surprise me if someone did!  A few miles away is Munits Cave. This has an interesting story of murder involving a Shaman and the son of an indian Chief . Also known as the bat cave,

Rainbow Road asylum?

Story: Hello Scott, My friends and I were bored today after an adventurous day at Six Flags, and I always heard about this “asylum” which I deemed immediately to be false because I was never a believer. Let me tell you I am now. My friends and I all saw lights flickering on and off in the house while it was still inhabited and a strange cloud of thick smoke seemed to form around the garage of the newly built home on the right side. I keep seeing different stories about the history/Stories/Hauntings of this Rainbow Road and I really just want to know the history behind “the mansion.” The history of the houses on Rainbow Road intrigue me and just want to know the truth. Who has owned the house, why people moved out, why there were transfers of ownership and such. I’ve began to research Krilich but that leaves some grey areas. Who owned the property before him? Why did he leave? Who bought it after? ETC. If there is any way you can help me figure out the history of these specific houses that are supposedly haunted and insane asylums please let me know. It means a lot. Thanks.  Mark M.

Response from Scott Markus: First off, you’ve come to the right place.  This was the first site to report about the unfortunate death that happened on the Krillich estate and we even have the crime scene photos thanks to the amazing willingness of the sister and father of the boy who died to share their stories with us.  However, I’m curious where exactly you were.  There was a sanitarium off of Cuba Road, which is mentioned in these pages, which lead to many people accidentally calling the Rainbow Road Krillich property an asylum – it simply never was.  Many of your questions will be answered by looking through the Rainbow Road category (found on the right), which not only talks about spooky stories and false urban legends like the asylum, but also the true history of the place, which, while tragic, is far less colorful than many of the tales being told today.

So, to get to the bottom of what you saw, can you describe to me exactly where you were?  It might be best to send a link or screen captured image from Google Maps.  All the best & I’m looking forward to hearing more from you!  Thanks for checking in!

White Cemetery’s famous vanishing car

Comment: Hello Scott! The particular page I am addressing is the one where you have posted e-mails of people’s stories/encounters. Regarding some of the stories, the children’s hospital is simply untrue. I live ten minutes away from Cuba/Rainbow Road/White Cemetery, and that is simply a fabrication. No one in this area has even heard of that story. Also, the vicinity, in which the house, silo, barn, and swingseat, were situated amungst are currently, torn down, (inculding the silo) and is making way for private english chaute’s.

The land is also private property. Another point I’d like to make is that, my friend read in a book a story about the asylum, surely if it had been published within a book the story should have some credibility shouldn’t it? I am also finding the fact that people from Waukegan know of Rainbow Road/Cuba Road, is hilarious. I knew of people, in the surrounding area, such as people in Mundelien, and Mount Prospect, who knew of the stories but I hadn’t realized it was so widespread. There are also stories of, a little girl who died on the railroad tracks, on cuba road, leading to White Cemetery.

My best friend Katie and I share common interests in “paranormal activity” quite possibly due to the fact we’ve been using the ouija board recently. Katie lives an hour away, so she comes only about once a month. In the previous time leading up to her visit, we were discussing that we should go to White Cemetery around 12 at night some time. After asking our parents approval, we left our house at about 10 at night in a party of four (my sister, her friend Laura, Katie, and myself). It was about 10:30 when we finally reached white cemetery.

To tell the truth, it is a very eerie thing to come across at night, the copper fence and gates are errie. Upon reaching White Cemetery, my friend Katie screamed “THERE IT IS!” Immediately we realized the gates were wide open. At the exact moment everybody screamed, and began “freaking out” especially my sister, who, the entire time, had her head burried in her hands.

PhotobucketSo, we decided to park our car. (it is labeled as the green mark on the attached picture.) by this time it was 10:50, and our parents had asked for us to return no later than eleven. We began arguing about who was going to go to the gates. Immediately, my sister began screaming “DON’T LEAVE ME ALONE” with tears pouring down her face. Reluctantly, I stayed behind with her, while Katie and Laura went to the gates. I handed Katie my camera, which I brought and put new batteries in. Upon waiting in the car, we spotted many different headlights, which all were clearly there and none disappeared, except for one.

In the pictures our car was located where the green mark is. The ONLY driveway is marked with the yellow. As we were sitting and waiting, headlights appeared as if they were coming down the street, having nothing better to do I turned my head to watch the car go by, (the headlights are marked by the red), and as I watched, the car simply vanished. It vanished where the blue mark is. The thing about it is that, even if there WERE a driveway for the “car” to turn into, the headlights would of changed directions. but they didn’t. they simply disappeared, and, like I said, it would be impossible for there to be a driveway because along that road there’s very thick trees.

PhotobucketFinally, Laura and Katie returned and I went with Katie to close the gates. The night was fairly warm, around 70 degrees, but upon being in front of the gates, it was absolutely freezing cold. As Katie and I proceeded to close the front gates it was as if we were touching ice. We then read the signs detailing that the gates would be closed at sundown due to vandalism. So, then we were perplexed because why were the gates open?

Attached is a picture that Laura took by the gate. I am mad at myself for not changing the format of the photo. It’s low quality because it was taken in VGA format, but it is apparent that an “orb” shaped figure is present.

There is also nothing to cause noise in the photo, because it was nor raining, nor was there condensation around the fence/gate. Thank you for your time. –Anthony.

Response from Scott Markus: I love the care you’ve taken in reconstructing your story – all the way down to the map.

First, I will address your questions about the photograph that you took. This is not a ghost. There is nothing paranormal about this image. How can I be so sure? The ‘orb’ you can see here is hexagonally shaped, which is the same shape of a camera iris (or aperture).

Eventhough you may not feel the moisture, it was definitely there. The same exact shape will be seen in most cases of lens flare.

PhotobucketI don’t fully understand your incredulousness when it comes to people knowing about Cuba Road when they live in far off lands like… Waukegan. In reality these are famously haunted sites. Evenmoreso now with the Internet continuing to spread the info. My co-author, Mary Czerwinski visited Paris, and, when she was there, people were asking her about Resurrection Mary. I wouldn’t call that halarious, but that’s definitely incredible and impressive.

To your question of, “if it’s been published in a book, the story should have credibilty” question, well, the printed word isn’t what it used to be.  Speaking as someone who has a book published, when the publisher questioned a fact in my book, it was definitely the exception, not the norm. I’d be very curious to see what sources your book cited.  What was the name of the book?

Criticism of Ghost Hunters on Rainbow Road

Comment: Ok the person who wrote the whole thing about the asylum on rainbow road has obviously been lied too. My best friend lives right off of middlefork and his property backs up to the supposed insane asylum. I have been in there and it was never an asylum. The were no electric chairs in there. Yes there is graffiti. And as far as the screams go. It was probably us messing around at my friends house where we constantly had parties. The actual house that was there is gone and a new subdivision of really nice houses is being built. The old house was rumored to be a mob hideout. No one has ever died there. It sounds to me like older brothers and sisters have either lied to you or been lied to themselves. But to the person who said their brother saw electric chairs. No he hasn’t. It was an old house that had been torn down over a year ago. –Andrew J. Kay

Response from Scott Markus: Andrew, I was going to post your message in its entiriety on the site, until it got unreasonably abrasive (some of his comments were deleted). For some reason there are urban legends about the site being an institution – obviously it was not. Part of the goals of this site is to set the record straight on the various haunted locations across Chicagoland. Keeping with the goal of setting the record straight is that there actually was a death at the house. A 7 year-old boy died there in 1968. The article, republished from the Chicago Tribune, is posted on the site – look at the 12/29/04 submission further down this page.
Regardless of your feelings of the validity of the paranormal (do ghosts exist or not), it is definately facinating to observe how many people are interested in learning about this specific plot of land, and it’s interesting to see how urban legends spread and transform over time. However, I have spoken with too many credible people who claim to have had first-hand accounts to fully discount every possibility that there is something going on.
To end in agreement of your main point – the location on Rainbow Road was never an asylum, and, yes, whoever claimed that they found electric chairs there was either lying or mistaken.

Asylum on Cuba, not Rainbow Road

Story: I don’t think it was an insane asylum but most of the stories I’ve heard and read about all say it is. One night me and three of my friends went to Cuba Road to look for anything strange. We didn’t see anything at the cemetery but when we got to the gate on Rainbow Road, strange things started to happen. It was about 11:00 at night when we got there. We parked along side of the road where no one can see us and one of my friends stayed in the car just in case a cop showed up. The gates were closed and locked so we saw no way in. But by looking around we saw an opening in the fence. We climbed through and started to walk down the road. We heard some noises but they could have been the houses next door. As we walked we got as close to the big group of trees. Mind you it was very dark and scary. We started to hear sounds coming from the trees and thought it was a cop or something so we ran back to the car. We must have tripped a wire because when we got back to the car the cops showed up. They didn’t say anything but they were mad. They told us that it was a vacant house from the 30′s or so and there wasn’t any asylum there. They did say that the asylum was on the other side of Northwest Hightway on Cuba Road, but that’s all they said. They also warned that when somebody goes back there, the cops get called very fast – there are wires and an alarm. After they drove off we got out of the car and took one final picture of the gates to remember the night. As we walked back to the car, I started to get in and looked at the front end and saw a hand print but all my friends got in to the car from the back and so did I. We turned around and went back to Cuba Road to go home and saw a car in front of us that seemed to be coming at us and then disappered right in front of us. Very scary [stuff]. –William

A reader’s first visits to White Cemetery

Story: Around Halloween, a lot of people in my school were mentioning Cuba Road and the strange experiences they had there. Two of my friends and I are very interested in this type of stuff so we decided to check it out ourselves. We live less than 20 minutes away from Cuba Road, so we made a few trips.

The first time we went, we wanted to check out White Cemetery. We parked next to it on a dirt road. While we were getting out of the car, we heard strange noises that seemed to be coming from the direction of the cemetery. We walked toward the entrance and one of my friends started videotaping. After videotaping outside of the cemetery for a few minutes we decided to leave because I was getting really scared. When we were back in the car, my friend that was driving said he didn’t have his keys. My other friend and I thought he must be kidding just to scare us because he knew we were already petrified. After the three of us searched the car and couldn’t find the keys, the driver decided he would go out and see if he dropped them around the gates. As he was getting out of the car, a black SUV type car turned into the dirt road we were on and slowly drove past. We thought maybe it was a person who lived down the road. As my friend was looking for his keys near the cemetery (about five minutes after we first saw the black car) the car slowly drove past us once again. The two of us that were in the car were really scared so I took my cellphone out to call someone. As it was ringing, my phone started beeping and saying low battery. Then it turned off. I thought this was strange because my phone said full battery on the way there when I was calling my mom. When the driver got back to the car saying he couldn’t find the keys, we had to call someone to pick us up. We had just enough time to call someone and tell them to come get us before my friend’s phone died as well. While waiting for my friend’s dads to get us, we waited in the car. Out of nowhere, the same black car drove down the dirt road again. This is when we knew something wasn’t right because within 15 minutes this car had driven past three times. Before our ride came, the car drove past us another two times. I don’t know if it was just a neighbor concerned that we were there, or the black car that is known to drive on Cuba Road.

After this experience, we were determined to go back and find out more. That next weekend, we went back with more people this time to see if anything unusual would happen. We pulled into the same road and got out. We started videotaping and one of my friends went into the cemetery (even though we aren’t supposed to) and walked around. We stayed there for a little while and decided to leave because it seemed like nothing was happening.

In the car we decided to look for Rainbow Road and see what we could find there. One of my friends knew how to get there because the year before she went. We pulled into this hilly road and went up it. My friend said she knew we were going the right way because to the right of the road was a little pond she remembered seeing the year before. However, when we got to the spot where the asylum was supposed to be, there was no building there. All there was left was a silo and a dog barn next to it. We walked down a little path and found a swing set, see-saw, and slide. We didn’t find much more so we decided to leave. As we were driving back down the road, in the trees we found red balloons. There were at least five all together. We didn’t know what they were. So from this, I want to find out more information about this place. Can you help me? And did we experience anything the first time going to White Cemetery?

Response from Slim Pictures: I have to say the phone thing is noteworthy and I really do think something unique did happen at that moment, especially since two phones were impacted in the same way. More likely than not the car driving past was probably just a local checking up on you since it is a high traffic area for people to cause trouble. The house (not asylum) on Rainbow Road is now gone, but you were in the right place. The red balloons were just red balloons. Just because something may seem weird, doesn’t mean it is.

Historical info on Rainbow Road

Thought: I’m in Rockford, IL, and have been to Rainbow Road four times. We haven’t been past the gates yet (afraid of getting arrested, don’t know where to park the car, etc.).  I share a lot of thoughts with the person who posted on 7/20/04. I’ve done a lot of research (as much as I can do from Rockford), and I can’t find anything on there being an asylum. There was one in Elgin that closed in the 60′s, and of course Manteno, but I highly doubt there was ever one on this property. I’m guessing the only reason anything still stands on the property is because as long as it looks they way it does, it brings down the property value which equals lower property taxes.

I plan to go to the Barrington library when I get time to do more research on the property. I will write again if I find anything out. I’d love to hear any other info anyone else has!

The Finer Points of Rainbow Road

Story: I have a questionon on the gated entrance off Rainbow Road to the abandoned property: did this property ever have an insane asylum on it? Everyone keeps saying yes there was, and its really starting to annoy me because I cant find anything on it anywhere. They usually have records of places like this built in IL or the US, but there was none in that area. The place is certainly big enough for a building like that and I know the whole entire property is barb wired. The gated entrance could also throw off the looks of a building such as an insane asylum, because not many in that area has gates such as those. I read next to the gate there is a camera in one of the trees and there is a fuse box with wires ripped out of it. Maybe those are the police’s camera, because of the high amount of people that go back there. Also, if the place was owned in the 1930s there certainly wouldn’t be cameras. If there was an insane asylum back there recently I could see a camera at the entrance. But when I was back there (I know its trespassing) there was things that could be part of an insane asylum such as tennis courts and shuffleboard courts. Are you sure the place was owned by the mob? The items in the barn did not look that old, I would say they were from the ’80s at the oldest. That picture of the barn or stables on your website on the second page wasn’t there. We looked for it didn’t see it, all we saw was the barn, silo, and doghouse. That part was probably directly across from the silo if I would guess a spot for it. We did not go far enough into the property to see more buildings but I believe thats all thats there. The house’s foundation is viewable but we didn’t feel like walking through weeds to get to the pool/deck. I also found that the name of the doctor at this supposed insane asylum is Dr. Tibol. You somewhere can see his name sketched into the driveway of a house in that area. And finally I read in a forum where a resident of 22 years in that area expressed that the house was owned by a mobster who went to jail and his property went up for grabs. He had a high security home which explains the barbed wire and gate. This place is so confusing, I’m getting so frustrated on the truth of this property, but I am sure there is a true story behind it and I know someone knows it.  –Greg Bock

Response from Scott Markus: You had a lot of good questions, and very good observations.  The frustration and attention to detail really does show that you’re giving this search your ‘all,’ so my hat is off to you.  Unfortunately, no, we do not know for certain that a mobster owned the property, but we felt confident to extrapolate that information based on hearsay added the the current and former Mafia presence in the area (under the radar, but still VERY present).  I am living in Hawaii now, so I haven’t been back to that property for a few years.  I heard that somewhat recently the barn that is pictured on my web site did also burn down.  You made a great observation that most don’t – the location was ‘lived in’ somewhat recently.  In the area near the swimming pool, there is a satellite dish that does date back to the 1980s.  So, obviously people have lived there since the 1930s.  Abandoned properties deterrorate faster than you’d think.  It’s like a place can age 50 years in the span of 5 years when people aren’t taking care of it.  I too have heard many of the allegations that the property was an asylum.  My only guess is that people were getting it confused with the Sunnybrook Asylum in Fox Lake, which, after a tip off from our web site, it turned out to be a utopian society, not an asylum after all.  If you want to see a cool haunted asylum, check out this web link:  theunexplainedworld.com/manteno/index.htm.  So, the tales of Dr. Tibol (whom I haven’t heard of until now) are more likely just a colorful detail in one of the many urban legends.  However, it is still a lead to check up on.  I’ll surf around and see what I can come up with.  Please do keep me informed if you find the real story behind the property.  Thanks!

Questions & Picture of the House on Rainbow Road

Story: First of all to get a good view of the property we got a arial picture of the property.  One picture was from 1998 which totally you could see the house in.  But in 2002 the house was definitely gone.  So in that 4 years someone burned it down, I have heard so many stories on the way it burned was training for police/fire/swat or that Cuba Township burned it down because of all the controversy on it.  We went to Rainbow Road where the gates are at the bend of the road.  We parked a couple blocks away and went down the road.  We know it is trespassing, but early we saw a group of kids leaving the property and we asked them and they said the police had unlocked the gates and went in there but they had left 10 mins ago.  So we checked and the gate was locked so we figured the police wouldn’t be back.  We went down the road and you see the spot where the house was burned.  Its all tall grasses, we didn’t go look for the pool.  To the right you see the barn, silo, and doghouse.  We never went in to the barn we were too scared.  We got some pictures and left the property.

My questions are that why does everyone express that there was an insane asylum on this property?  Was there really a mental facility on the property like everyone says.  We didn’t see any place for one, although we didn’t search the property on the northwest side.  Could have the house been an asylum?  I looked closely into the pictures from space of the property and it looks like there is another building with a brownish roof directly to the left of the silo and the road.  Also if you look closely again in the back upper left corner theres like tennis courts or some sort of leisure area and a field.  Heres a space picture from 2002 of the property:

PhotobucketI’m pretty freaked about this place, but I’m still not sure why people are saying there was an insane asylum back there.  Is it because the gates look like it leads to an old building?  Im still just going to go with my instincts, its just an old property which was abandoned.  People say a family was murdered during Christmastime and there, well were still Christmas decorations in that house (not anymore) and the place they were murdered was in the barn.  The only reason it is still there and there is a no trespassing sign is because someone has to own it, either an old family member or even the government.  If they did fire practice in there, they had to get permission from someone. — Gregory Bock

Response from Scott Markus: Well, first off, the house was burned during a Firemen’s training exercise closer to ’98 than ’02.  The truth is, it has to be the nature of urban legends.  The “cold hard facts” history of the property is not widely known, so stories are invented to provide explanations.  I’m sure there are still people around today that know the full true story, but I haven’t run across them unfortunately, and if you happen to, do have them eMail me.  In the book I wrote I have a whole chapter on urban legends and I have a big section on the House on Rainbow Road with a lot of first hand accounts from people.  I’ve said it at least a dozen times since I started taking eMails through my web site – stay clear of the House on Rainbow Road.  As you know and mentioned, it’s illegal to tread there, in addition it would be very easy to get hurt back there and it would be very tough and time consuming if you were to need medical help to arrive.  Don’t forget most of ghost research is the research, it’s not going out to create the new stories.  In the end the decision comes down to you – be safe and keep me posted on what’s up.  Also, if you send me your pictures in an eMail I will publish them on my web site for you.  Good Luck!

Story:  Me and my friends are ghost hunters we have been there, we saw the five tree mark, then in the tree mark there was a red light in the middle of the five trees. incase you don’t remember anything about the five trees, it’s right by the swing set (behind the barn).

Does anyone know anything about the insane asylum on Lake Zurich Road?   We have been there and traveled all around the place, and found documents.  I just want to know the story behind it. I have not only been to the house of Rainbow Road, but also inside the asylum, and my friends took pictures and we got photos of actual ghost, then all our batteries died, and it got really cold and stuff. The road is off of Cuba Road, you go down and take a right on Lake Zurich Road.  At the asylum you can take pictures and when they come out you get pictures of ghosts, its freaky yet exciting. –Troy

Reader Reply: I have been to the house twice. The first time the “Guest House” next to the barn was still there and the second time it had been torn down. There was never an insane Asylum on the property. It did belong to a family who were killed there around Christmas. There is currently a care-taker, who takes care of the property so anything new there is from him. I would suggest not going on the property because the last time I was there, the care-taker was there. Since we left without doing anything he didn’t call the police, but my cousin’s friend had the police called on him and is no longer allowed to go on or near the property. Again, there is nothing left there to look at and they are currently trying to sell the property. But, yes the house was and the property is haunted. -Rachel
