Murderous Mansions and Tunnels (CA)

Upon the advice of awesome research partner Mary Czerwinski, I’m starting to look into the so-called Los Feliz Murder Mansion.  As the story goes (more detail here), in 1959 a Dr. Harold N. Perelson murdered his wife, then beat one of his three children nearly to death before committing suicide himself.  All three children did survive….felt the need to find a silver lining here.  Since that murder, no one has occupied the house.  One family has owned it for the past 60 years, but the house has been left eerily undisturbed, allegedly to the extent that there are still board games in-progress sitting on tables waiting to be finished from a game started during the cold war.

I happened to be in the area recently and decided to drive past the property.  Even then, not leaving the car, but driving up the driveway as far as you can go (which isn’t far at all) is a bit of a harrowing experience.

Los Feliz Murder Mansion, Los Feliz Murder Mansion

(Above: as close as I got) I do want to investigate the location professionally and with permission, but I anticipate a tough sell to the hard-to-locate home owner. Due to the elusive nature of this property, even if it was haunted, there aren’t really any possibilities for witnesses to any strange occurrences, but I will ask you, the cyber audience anyway: have any of you heard of any ghost stories associated with this property?

In other news, I attended a Moth storytelling session yesterday and one of the stories that was told was about the ghost of Zelda in West Covena.  This is apparently the ghost of a child from the 1900s who was murdered underground in a spillway (now called Zelda’s Tunnel/Pit/Cave/etc) that is still accessible today.  The ghost story involves, at the very least, the phantom sound of a bell, which Zelda was wearing on a necklace at the time of her death.  Other recountings are more urban legend-y and say Zelda was sacrificed by a cult and will now kill anyone walking through her tunnel (there’s actually a fun retelling of this tale along with a personal….encounter(?) at this site).  Questions to you guys:  Do you have any tales of your own from this site?  Do you have any hard evidence that there was actually a murder here (something that would also tell us Zelda’s last name)?  And, of course, where EXACTLY is the entrance to her tunnel?

Robinson Woods is, simply put, a magical place.  In the midst of its wonder is a negative history, not the least of which is the theft of the land from the Robinson family by the state of Illinois (that story is still ongoing.

My book, Voices from the Chciago Grave, relays a pretty amazing first-hand account I and Mary Czerwinski had at the location.  The wild deer on the land played a large role.  You may have seen the video of Mary and I talking about our encounter on CLTV’s “Metromix: the TV Show.”  However, it’s a 15 minute story boiled down to less than 2, so it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

Regardless, I’ve run into a couple of wonderful people who have the same passion towards this area that I have.  The most recent is Karl K. who has quite a few amazing pictures to share with us of those same deer and orbs.  As usual, click on the images to view them larger.

Response by Scott Markus:  First off, thank you for sharing!  Of the pics you sent, the orb that stood out the most to me was the last image.  It’s certainly not fog, dust, smoke, etc.

Robinson Woods is a truly magical place and I do believe that it is descendants of the Robinson family who are reincarnated in the deer that currently reside there, which makes those images of the orbs with the deer all the more important.  I don’t know if you’ve read my book at all yet, but I wrote it with information learned from Robinson family descendants.  I’m interested in seeing if any of the faces you’ve captured might look familiar to the Robinson family members I know.  Thanks again!  How did you first discover this location?  What draws you to it?

From Scott Markus:

Karl,  Yeah, I live in Los Angeles now and am currently in AZ. I do travel quite a bit and work a ton, but definitely don’t take my slow response time as an indication that I’m not interested in your photos.  I haven’t seen them all, but love what I have seen. When I get back to my computer in December, I will definitely create a post about them, giving you credit as ‘Karl K,’ but keeping other info secret.

I do hope to come back to Chicago in December and will definitely be visiting RW at that time. I intend to do a little investigation on video with Ursula Bielski, Dan Melone (an archeologist that has studied the area) and Buzz Spreeman, one of Robinson’s descendants. You would be very welcome to join as well. Also, I would be very to happy to autograph a book for you and will personalize it as well.

Thanks for the info about the fire. Do you know of there are any news articles on it?

Thanks for keeping in touch!

From Karl:

I do not believe the fire made the news,, but i was coming out of the woods at the time,, smelled the smoke , then heard the approaching sirens, i was heading into the fire at dusk,as i was  leaving the woods ,, i was sneaking around in the brush and have some video of it,, i had to be careful as to not be seen for fear of being thought of the arsonist that caused this,(says the police officer i spoke to during the fire ),,but that afternoon,,prior to the fire,, i found a old  wooden tied together little ” hutch” for  hunting - homeless , im not sure,, definately old,, but i took video of this and even mentioned the very large feeling of being watched,,,,,,about 25 mins later was the fire

I will be posting those vids on youtube shortly,,DBLK CHICAGO,, is my youtube name,,all vids there are of my deer friends,,check them out if you have a moment, you will get a clue of how these deer interact with me,, and understand my own personal interest in this location.

One last crazy question,,for now,, would you happen to know or could find out in time,, if alexander robinson, or close relatives of, had a bad knee or a leg break / damage of any sort,,,

Its a stretch,, but there are two bucks that have leg damage,, healed breaks,, large deformities on their legs that i have befriended and can hand feed,, and that is extremely rare to do to a buck in the wild ,,  I THINK I PREVIOUSLY SENT A PIC OF ME AND ONE OF THE BUCKS
Please do keep a eye out for my book purchase on your site in the next few days,,and when possible,, scribble a little something good and original,,,
once again,, thanks again , looking forward to the possibility of a adventure together in R.W.

Heres a few more photos,, the vids i took , like i said a little shakey but still clear enough to comprehend .The deer with the hat on photos are not photo shopped,, they let me interact with them like that,,if you notice, in the photos and videos, if you saw them yet,, the deer are always by my side when i am in the woods.

I have to keep reminding myself that Robinson is not the only  ” spooky” place around, that theres alot going on everywhere, that keeps you busy,, but like i keep saying ,, its my backyard !!!

If you can post video on your site,,ill shorten down the vids i have to the specifics of and send those to you also,,, once again thanks for the reply,, i wont press the panic button as soon in the future.

Talk with you soon,, health and happiness to you in the new year to come

I have more ,,lol,, use what you think is good,, look in the trees,, and remember,,, i am shooting into the woods , due west,,making sure there is no light in the background.

Video: Ghost Hunting Napa Valley

Max Timm and I checked out a number of haunted sites in Napa Valley.  Can’t wait to get back.  Please do leave a comment if there’s a location in the area we missed and if you have any information (historical or paranormal) about the places we did cover!

Editorial: Looking for Rebobs in Napa Valley

Hello one & all!  I hope you had a wonderful Halloween season.  I for one had a blast spending a couple of weeks ghost hunting and attenting different events in Chicago before spending Halloween weekend in New Jersey for the annual Chiller event…..did not expect that much snow in October!  I’ve gotten several dozens of pieces of mail in the last week, which I’m hoping to get to very soon.

In addition, though, I was just up in Napa Valley, CA doing a little ghost hunting.  In fact, I’m going to be posting a video about that experience tomorrow, but in the meantime, I can’t wait to create my first post about Napa-area ghost stories.  This place was AMAZING!  At the top of my list is the really intriguing story about the Rebobs of Patrick Road.  Don’t know what I’m talking about?  You will when the video posts tomorrow (the tags to this post will give you a little clue too).  If you do have any knowledge on this topic, please drop me a line in the comments and share!  In the meantime, I’m also posting a map of the area, because, while we did try to find the location, we were unsuccessful.  Any information you can share would be greatly appreciated! Editorial: A visit to Linda Vista Hospital

For those of you who don’t know, my day job is working as a filmmaker (see, proof!: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1377864/)

Scott Markus - Linda Vista Hospital Ghosts

Whether it be Chicago, Hawaii or Los Angeles, it’s always an amazing experience making a movie on-location (as opposed to in a studio). Now, I do hope to uncover some ghost stories from our many backlots here in CA. I’ve worked on a handful and can’t imagine them NOT being haunted, but that’s a tale for another post (though if you have any leads, let me know).

Today I unexpectedly found myself at Linda Vista Hospital in East Los Angeles. Not only was I without any ghost hunting equipment, but I was also without a camera (the images you see were taken with my cell phone). What an amazing gold mine this place was – a pure playground of amazing locations from basement to roof.

Scott Markus - Linda Vista Hospital Ghosts

I talked to one worker there who came across an (at first) cooperative spirit. After he and a friend heard unexplainable sounds, the man requested that the spirit knock on the wall. The spirit complied. After asking for another series of knocks, only louder, the spirit again complied. Walking towards the source of the sounds, the man came across a doorway that he believed these sounds were emanating from. He asked, “Is this the room you’re in?” This time the response was less benign. He heard a loud scratch on the wall he was standing next to, which was immediately followed by a growl into his ear. Both of these sounds were heard by the man and his friend. As one might assume, they made a hasty exit and did not return again that night.

This location might sound or look familiar to you. In addition to serving as a filming location to literally dozens of movies and television shows in recent years, this hospital was also the subject of a recent “Ghost Adventures” episode (season 3, episode 5 to be exact) and, even more recently, an episode of Paranormal Challenge (season 1, episode 10, which featured the always amazing Ursula Bielski).

As you might guess, I fell in love with the location and will be covering it extensively in my upcoming book.  Now is your chance – What do you know about the location?  Do you know any interesting trivia that one can’t easily find on Wikipedia?  Have you had a paranormal experience there?  Have you heard any Urban legends about the hospital?  Do you have any interesting pictures, video, EVPs from the location to share?  Here, I’ll bribe you with more glorious cell phone pictures (click the thumbnails to see them larger) (in order, left to right: operating room, basement-I know the morgue is down here, but can’t say for sure this is the right area, main 1st floor hallway, filming in the rear courtyard, hospital chapel):

Oh yeah, and as if that place wasn’t rockin’ enough as it is – they’re also hosting a zombie prom dance in the chapel room on Oct 29. If you can make it, you must attend!

Hauntings at the Mother Rudd House, Gurnee, IL

Message from Dana W:  Hey there Scott, my husband and I were scoping your page and we’d love to order your book (signed, would be awesome!)–What is the easiest way to order it???
Also, if you are looking for new places to investigate I recently had a photoshoot here:
Mother Rudd Historical Home in Gurnee IL.
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mother-Rudd-Home-Museum/242108849143467?sk=wall

Not sure if this would catch your interest but after I had about 4 sessions here I started doing some research and finding out how they have had paranormal activity take place on the grounds and in the home. I, myself always feel a bit *off* when I photograph here.  Little fact: there is a foundation built on the site which is from the original 1800 stone building that at once was used as part of the Underground Railroad. I have been told that spirits of slaves still haunt/roam the grounds. Not threatening, just confused and in fear. If you did check this place out, I would love to come as I am very familiar with it and so is a part of my family.

Just thought I’d pass it along..

Enjoy your Chicago visit!! Maybe we’ll swing in for a visit at Unique Games. My husband is eager to talk to you about some things. ;) Needless to say he (..ahem, we) are mesmerized with all things supernatural. Kudos to you for pursuing your passion! I think your book definitely be an enlightening read!

Response from Scott Markus:  Dana, I LOVE the Mother Rudd House!  I had the pleasure of visiting that site a few times in 2000 and 2001 while doing a documentary on the Underground Rail Road in Lake County with Dr. James Dorsey.  I had never heard about any hauntings on the site.  Unfortunately, I’m already back in LA, but maybe we can plan something for mid-December.  I’ve missed the last 3 Christmases, so I’m really trying to get back this time around!

The book is available on this web site in the STORE section (link at the top).  When you make your purchase (via PayPal) just leave a note and I’d be very happy to autograph and personalize it!

A call from Beyond at the Gate?

Video Submission: The following link was sent to me by Anthony Leiser, who I recently met at Ursula Bielski’s 3rd Chicago Ghost Conference (more on that later).

Response from Scott Markus:  Very creepy video!  I’ve already told someone about it and it got a real reaction without even seeing the video.  This is an impressive case of instrumental transcomminucation (ITC).  Truth be told, all instances of using equipment to communicate with “the other side” is technically ITC, but I limit the ITC tags to instances where general, non-ghost hunting-specific tools are used, such as televisions, phones and email (yes, even email).

Mundelein Ghost stories?

Question: Hey Scott, Do you have any Mundelein-specific ghost stories or links to any? Thanks, Craig

Response from Scott Markus: Craig, amazingly, I don’t know too much about Mundelein ghost stories. Certainly there are tons of amazing stories nearby in Cuba Road and the Gate in Libertyville. Outside of a couple of haunted houses, I don’t know of a single haunted site in Mundelein except for one – The Mundelein Seminary.

In the late ’90s I heard from a security guard that patrols the grounds that there’s a lot of paranormal activity on the site. However, being currently employed by the seminary, it was like pulling teeth to get him to say even that much. He did not get into specifics.

In winter of ’09 I stayed the night at the Seminary with Ursula Bielski. We conducted a couple of investigations and got some very strong responses. However, I would like to conduct another investigation to know exactly what we were dealing with. I will say that we believed two different entities, one a nun and the other a priest, communicated with us and neither were negative.

Do you have any Mundelein ghost stories of your own?

Also, are you in Illinois at the moment? I will be there from Thursday to Oct 10 for the Chicago Ghost Conference and the Chicago Horror Film Fest.

I need to start by prefacing this entry.  In covering ghost stories I/we are covering real life, historical events.  Largely, these events are from a deeper history where enough time has past that the wounds aren’t fresh-where time has allowed emotions to mellow.  The frequent retellings of Julia Buccola’s life, death in 1921 and the supernatural occurrences since, are accepted, even though Julia wasn’t a public figure while alive.  There are also the tragic events that, though perhaps fresh, such as the 1979 crash of flight 191 in Des Plaines or the 2003 E2 Nightclub Stampede where 21 lives were lost.  Though these events are recent, there’s a lower expectation of privacy due to their being part of national news stories.
Unfortunately, there are times when discussing the historical moments that define a town, one must mention a recent “black mark.” In the 2003 release of the book “Voices from the  Chicago Grave” I mentioned Libertyville’s so-called murder mansion that was the site of at least one Mafia killing (of Bobby Plummer) in the mid 1980s and, prior to that, a grisly slaying of Bruce and Darlene Rouse in 1980. The mention in the book, which was no longer than what you just read now, receiving quite the cryptic message from someone connected with the murders.
Later, discussing the hauntings at the site of the “House on Rainbow Road” and the mysterious origins of such hauntings, we learned of the death of seven year-old William Cokenower on the property in 1968.  To my surprise I was contacted by his sister, who, along with their father, was amazingly helpful in helping us (as a whole) understand the incident that lead to their family member’s demise and, perhaps, the hauntings that followed.
Recently someone has come to me with a story relating to a somewhat recent murder-suicide and one of the most talked about haunted sites in Chicagoland.  The person, who I do know by name, but would like to remain anonymous sent me the following message:
Went to the gate with a couple friends one night.  Back in Oct ’91 I believe.  Walked back there as far as we could before getting scared and turning back.  As we walked back, one of my friends started babbling like he was talking in tongues or something.  We thought he was fucking around but it was a little too weird.  Especially since he didn’t speak all the way home.  Two days later he took a shotgun and killed his ex-girlfriend and then himself.  Surely a coincidence.
I pried a little more.  I agreed it was pure coincidence, but still interesting to hear that one of the last acts someone did before committing one of the most heinous acts was visiting a haunted site.  For the most part, it’s just a footnote, but one would have to wonder if being in a place with a dark past would’ve had some psychological impact on his future actions.
Eventually, I was able to get the name “Chris Trevino” out of my source.  At that point I was able to verify that the timeline is accurate.  Chris did indeed kill his ex-girlfriend before turning the gun on himself.  His girlfriend died on the spot and Chris died four days later.
The following articles are some of the resources I used to verify the story I was told.

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1991-11-05/news/9104090624_1_shotgun-two-other-girls-halloween-dance

Upon reading these articles, my curiosity is piqued in regards to a connection between the “speaking in tongues” episode and the tragedy two days later.  As you’ll see in the articles, Chris was a well liked, educated and completely ‘together’ individual.  Granted, high school relationships are some of the most tumultuous imaginable.  However, it does seem noteworthy to me that this pretty well-adjusted and highly intelligent kid did what he did and just two days earlier was talking in tongues in a place where there are actively some very negative entities.
I am in the middle of a documentary that deals with current unsolved murders where the coroner has requested paranormal investigations.  We are tremendously timid about doing anything that might be construed as exploitive or disrespectful.  At the same time, this world of ‘ghost hunting’ isn’t about getting cheap thrills and scaring ourselves, but about answering a plethora of questions.  Unfortunately the murder-suicide of 1991 won’t have anymore questions answered, but this is a little bit of anecdotal evidence.  Maybe it’s nothing, but then again, that’s not for a single person to decide.

Ghostly conversations in a haunted Inn

Story:  Scott, first of all, I am a total skeptic to anything that is paranormal.  In 1998 my wife and I booked a night at a Bed & Breakfast called the Inn at Pine Terrace in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.  The night was mid-week and we were the “only” ones booked in for the evening.  The only staff on hand was a elderly woman who checked us in for the evening.  The Inn is very old and has had many distinguished people who stayed over the years.
Our room was on the second floor of the Inn and as I mentioned, we were the only guests that evening.  After getting settled in the room, my wife wanted to sit in the whirlpool in the bathroom area.  I told her that I’d watch some television while she unwound in the bath.  I laid on the bed and after a few minutes I heard some conversations outside our room in the hallway area.  I remarked to my wife that there must be other guests checking in as I heard the talking outside our room in the hallway area.  I decided to peek out our door into the hallway to see who was checking in.  As I peered into the hallway there was no one there and no conversation heard.  The second floor is divided into six or seven rooms.  I again laid on the bed and started to watch television when the conversations started again.  The sound of talking was rather loud but the words were undistinguishable.  I again got up and went out into the hallway.  The Inn keeps all the room doors open til guests check in so I personally peeked into each room and no one but us were on the second floor.  I again went back into our room and about ten minutes later heard the conversation start again but lasted only about two minutes and that was the last I heard for the night.  It was hard for me to fall asleep that evening and finally did so around mid-night.
The next morning we ventured downstairs to the first floor level where the Innkeeper is located.  The Innkeeper was another elderly woman who must have releived the woman from the night before.  I mentioned to the Innkeeper that I was happy that there were other guests who must have checked in besides us and she informed me that there was no other parties registered or who were in the Inn.  I told her that I heard several conversations the night before and she said that in the lobby was a guest book along with several newspaper articles about the Inn.  I got a cup of coffee and went to look at the guest book.  The newspaper articles stated that there was a young girl who committed suicide on the third floor in the late 1800′s and that the family who owned the house were known to bury their dead in the basement.  This kind of made me a little uneasy.  I again went back and asked the Innkeeper if she was sure no one else was in the Inn the prior evening and she said she was sure.  She said that besides herself the only other people in the Inn was kitchen help who arrived around six am to get breakfast started.  The newspaper articles went back about a hundred years and there was mention of people who thought the Inn was haunted.  As I stated, I am a skeptic until proven different and I came away from the Inn with more questions than answers.  Over the last few years we have often thought of going back to the Inn but haven’t done so.  I am not sure of what I heard but I know that it sounded like three or four people were outside our room that night and very close to our rooms door.  The Inn serves breakfast in the basement and  we decided to skip breakfast and get back on the road.  This was quite the experience and I’m not sure that I want to experience it again.
Mark and Barb Colrud
Reply from Scott Markus: Barbara, Thanks so much for your story!  There isn’t much online about this location being haunted, so the search of the origins of those phantom conversations is only beginning!

I wonder if the people who run the location are still so public about the dark and possibly haunted history of the site.  It seems strange that the tale of the suicide and burial are detailed in the scrap book they keep on-hand.  Their current website, understandably glosses over those darker passages (http://www.innatpineterrace.com/History.htm)
Again, thanks for sharing & if I ever get the chance, I’ll snoop around there a little myself!  If anyone else has visited this site, please leave a comment!
Reply from Mike: Scott….Thank You for the reply.  As I mentioned to you that I am a true skeptic at best but our experience at the Inn at the Pine terrace was truly unnerving to say the least.  I would think that if you email the Inn at their web site that they “may” confirm some of the strange things that occur at the Inn.  My wife and I may still stay there sometime before this upcoming winter and if so, I’ll let you know if we have any unusual occurences.  Best wishes…Mark Colrud
